Ryu Shi-won…to be married?

But…you’re the forever-young playboy bachelor. You’re the Clooney. You’re messing with the order of the universe!

Well, this must be proof…you can’t stay a man-child forever.

Actor, singer, Hallyu star Ryu Shi-won (Style, Wedding) announced that he’ll be getting married on October 26. Cue wave of tears in Japan.

He also announced that his fiancee is pregnant, and that he’ll be a father this coming spring. Aw. How cute will baby Ryu Shi-won be?

The ceremony will be closed (as in private, not a red carpet affair) and the couple is reportedly planning a very low-key wedding for their closest family and friends. Ryu’s fiancee is a dancer, introduced by a mutual friend last year.

The 39-year old actor made his debut sixteen years ago in nineties mania-drama Feelings, making him one of the early Hallyu stars who still sells out concert venues and makes ajummas scream like little girls.

To me, you will always be this guy:

Sohn Ye-jin and Lee Min-ki’s chilling romance

Sohn Ye-jin and Lee Min-ki will be pairing up in the movie Chilling Romance [오싹한 연애, a working title], in which she plays a woman who can see ghosts. She has cut herself off entirely from the rest of the world, but a romance develops with Lee’s character, who wants to protect her.

A rep from Sohn’s management explained that’s she’d fallen in love with the script early on and made the statement that she is “looking favorably” at the project. It’s a cautious way of saying that her side hasn’t finalized things yet, but things look good.

I’m still trying to picture these two in a romance together — it’s a little hazy in my mind, but I do love both actors. I can see Sohn Ye-jin nailing the vulnerability and complexity of a woman with unwanted supernatural powers. And Lee Min-ki as a devoted protector? Sign me up.

Sohn’s last project was the MBC romantic comedy Personal Taste with Lee Min-ho, where she played a cute, bumbling woman who falls in love with his perfectionist character, whom she initially mistakes for being gay. Meanwhile, Lee Min-ki had a very busy last year, with indie movie Oishii Man, thriller A Million, and the box-office blockbuster Haeundae. It looks like the next year will be equally busy for him: He’s busily filming Quick, an action comedy in which he plays a deliveryman who accidentally comes into possession of a bomb. He’ll begin shooting Road to Utah in California later this month, in which he plays a drifter who meets a woman in LA and embarks on a road trip with her.

Jang Hyuk up for new drama Poseidon

After dropping out of melo-fantasy drama Secret Garden (to be replaced by Hyun Bin, backstory here), Jang Hyuk is close to picking his next project: upcoming action-adventure drama Poseidon.

Think god of the sea, not Hollywood action film about sinking ships.

The drama, penned by screenwriter Jo Kyu-won (IRIS) and directed by PD Yoo Chul-yong (All In, H.I.T., Swallow the Sun), is about the Coast Guard. Er, I’m not sure if Coast Guard is right, since it’s not military, but more like ocean police. If there’s a better way to officially classify “cops on boats,” then that’d be them.

I don’t know any other plot details, but if the writer of IRIS is behind it, expect some intrigue, explosions, and guns. I don’t really care as long as he comes to work dressed like he is above.

The lead role was originally slated for Kang Ji-hwan, but his ongoing legal battle (over contracts) involved the production company for the drama, so they turned their eyes toward newly available Jang Hyuk for the lead. He’s currently reading the script, and looking upon the project favorably. If he goes with this drama (which I personally think is a better fit for him), it’ll be his first role in a year since Chuno.

Poseidon is aiming for broadcast early next year.

Jang Dong-gun and Go So-young become parents

Top stars Jang Dong-gun and wife Go So-young have welcomed their first child into the world, a baby boy born on the morning of October 4 at a Kangnam hospital in Seoul.

According to the stars’ management, the boy weighed in at 3.23 kg. Jang was at his wife’s side for the delivery, and both mother and child are reportedly healthy and well. Their son just missed sharing a birthday with mom, who turns 38 two days later on October 6. (Jang is 38.)

The couple married on May 2 this year after announcing that they were expecting. Given that Jang is practically the most popular Korean actor, like, ever, the event was a veritable who’s who of the biggest names in the Korean entertainment industry.

Congrats to the happy family! Man, is that kid gonna be gorgeous or what?

Kim Yoo-jung poised to break the space-time continuum

Child actress Kim Yoo-jung (Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child) has been cast in the MBC weekend drama Flames of Desire, not as one, but TWO characters. Really, Show? Are you that strapped for cash?

Will she be playing a shapeshifter? No. A body snatcher or face-copier? Nope. She’s just going to play the younger versions for both Seo Woo and Shin Eun-kyung‘s characters. Er, what now?

I know, I’m giving the show a hard time. But really…do they think we’re stupid? Because not only do we recognize kids who hop from drama to drama (most recently the kid from Cinderella’s Sister, I Am Legend, and Sungkyunkwan Scandal), but I think we’d KNOW if Kim, who’s very recognizable, appeared in the same drama as TWO different characters.

The only way I see this not jumping the shark is if there’s a story point, involving the characters’ doppelganger-hood. C’mon, Show. There’s a valid reason, right? RIGHT?

Sigh. I don’t know if that’s the case, and I wasn’t really planning on watching this makjang sucker, but I may have to now, just to see what possible reason they’d have, to get one girl to defy all logic of time and space. K-dramaland is truly testing my sanity with this one.

Flames of Desire stars Shin Eun-kyung, Seo Woo, Yoo Seung-ho, Lee Soon-jae, and Jo Min-ki, and premieres on MBC this Saturday.

Gumiho Girlfriend goes out on top

The ratings switched around for Thursday’s drama broadcasts, placing SBS’s fantasy-romantic-comedy series My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho in first place with a 19.9% as the drama concluded its run. (No spoilers in this post.) KBS’s action-comedy Runaway Plan B slipped a few percentage points but maintained a strong showing with a 17.9%.

Runaway had been the winner just the day before with a 20.7% premiere, but looks like a lot of people were curious about the fate of Gumiho‘s “hoi couple” (Shin Mina and Lee Seung-gi), and wanted to see if we would get our happy ending or not. (Warning: PLEASE do not spoil the ending in this post. The recap will be up soon enough, and you can wait a few measly hours, right? You can do eet!)

I’m pretty sure Runaway will be back solidly on top next week — even though that’s when SBS’s new challenger, Daemul, premieres.

The good news even extends toward perennial last-place drama Playful Kiss, which managed a relatively high 7.5% for its tenth episode. That means both My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho and Playful Kiss recorded their series highs, making it a pretty good showing all around.

Choi Siwon tackles high action in the streets of Japan

Speaking of Athena, now it’s Choi Siwon‘s turn for some of the attention. He’s pictured in these stills on location in Japan, where his appearance attracted quite a bit of bystander interest. No doubt some (most?) of that stems from his idol star status as one of the many pretty boys of Super Junior. And yes, he’s lookin’ sharp.

In this scene, his spy character is sent to settle a suspicious occurrence in Japan. What ensues is a high-action sequence involving a dangerous chase in the crowded streets, hampered by the throngs of citizens nearby.

Choi plays a rookie spy with the NTS who looks up to the agency’s top spy (Jung Woo-sung) as a mentor figure and follows his lead loyally. Athena airs in December.

Lee Min-ki cast as a California drifter

Lee Min-ki has been selected to headline the movie Road to Utah, which is a project that re-teams him with director Kim Jung-joong, with whom he worked on one of his previous movies, Oishii Man.

Sounds like Lee Min-ki is perfect for the role of K, a wanderer who has become lost in gambling and drinking. In Los Angeles, K has a chance meeting with Jin-yi, a woman with no hope and a rare disease who decides to go on one last trip before she dies. The two end up heading for Utah, and the movie is about what unfolds along the way.

The female lead has not been cast; producers have announced that they would pick their leading lady from an open casting call, looking everywhere from established actresses to rookies. They are looking for a “fresh face who isn’t typical of current actresses,” and casting will continue through early October.

Road to Utah will film in California (do we need to worry about some, uh, enthusiastic fans resorting to some stalker action?), and plans to begin shooting in mid-October.

Behind the scenes on Sungkyunkwan Scandal

It’s totally entertaining to see the onscreen camaraderie building between the four leads of KBS’s Sungkyunkwan Scandal, so it’s like icing on the cake to see that good-natured fun exists behind the scenes as well. In fact, before the drama began airing the four actors — Micky Yoochun, Park Min-young, Song Joong-ki, and Yoo Ah-in — stated that they all got along fabulously offscreen. Looks like it.

The drama recently released the following photos of its main quartet of kkot seonbis (pretty-boy Confucian scholars), also known as the Jalgeum quartet or Jalgeum F4. These photos were taken on the filming location in Yeongam-gun in south Jeolla province, in between filming, monitoring each other’s performances, and script rehearsing. Those of you who’ve seen through the latest episodes will no doubt recognize the scenes that were being shot when these were snapped.
